GEORGETOWN, Ky. --- The Life University Men's Soccer team gets back over .500 for the season following a dominant, 4-1 beating of Georgetown College on the road today in Mid-South Conference play.
Finding some late season momentum, Life U (7-6-1, 5-4-1 MSC) relied on a first half barrage of goals to race past a Georgetown College (10-4-1, 5-4-1 MSC) team that had been playing at a high level to this point in the season. Just 13 minutes into the game
Martijn Zuijderwijk got things started with a goal off a ball passed up from
Danny DeLorijn and Stan Vandierendonk to put the Running Eagles up 1-0. 10 minutes later, following a Tiger foul in the penalty area, DeLorijn pushed the lead to 2-0 off a penalty kick. Georgetown scored a goal of their own just a couple minutes later, but Life U quickly responded,
Bart Kooistra collecting a deflected save of a DeLorijn shot and kicking the ball into the net in the 28th minute to give the Running Eagles a first half 3-1 lead. After the halftime break Zuijderwijk added the final score of the game just 10 minutes into the period. Georgetown turned up the pressure in the second half, putting 11 shots on frame, but
Fabian Pekruhl and the defensive back line played lights out stopping every opportunity to steer the team to a 4-1 road victory.
Zuijderwijk had the best game of his young career, taking only two shots and scoring on both of them, while DeLorijn continued his excellent conference play, leading the team in shots and earning yet another goal too go with an assist. Returning to play after missing the last couple of games, Kooistra put up a score of his own. In as many games, Pekruhl again played lights out, collecting 12 saves in the dominant victory.
Depsite the lopsided score, the offensive statistics were rather close, Life U holding a 23-20 edge in shots (tied 13-13 in shots on goal), while Georgetown led in corner kicks 6-4. The Running Eagles collected more saves at 12-9. The teams tied in fouls at 6-6, but Georgetown was called on many more cards with three to Life U's one.
The Running Eagles finish the regular season at home with a contest against (RV) University of the Cumberlands at Silverbacks Park Friday, October 29 at 3:30 PM.
