WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. ---- The Life University men's soccer team kept it close, but a goal in the final portion of the match saw the team lose, 2-1, in conference action at (RV) University of the Cumberlands this afternoon.
NOTES
• The loss pushes Life U's record to 1-2 (0-1), while (RV) Cumberlands (Ky.) earned its first win of the season to move to 1-3-1 (1-0).
STANDOUT PERFORMERS
•
Zidane Bogle recorded the lone goal of the day for the Running Eagles on his only shot attempted.
• Despite taking the loss,
Fabian Pekruhl put together a strong game in goal, collecting six saves. That mark stands as his second best, just behind the seven that he registered at Reinhardt on September 7, 2019.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Cumberlands (Ky.) kept the ball on the attack early, but strong defensive plays including three great saves by Pekruhl over the first 10 minutes kept the scoreboard empty. Life U managed to flip the pressure back on the Patriots following that as
Reyes Hernandez kicked a shot on goal that was saved, but Cumberlands (Ky.) got on the board first in the 23rd minute. The teams continued playing hard as they went to the half, Patriots leading 1-0.
• Life U came out of the break with some momentum, Bogle connecting on a long ball into the upper corner of the net to tie the game at 1-1 just two minutes into the second half. The team's went back and forth trading possessions that ended up with shots on goal, but as the clock went below 20 minutes to play, Cumberlands (Ky.) got a shot past Pekruhl on a header to take a 2-1 advantage. The Running Eagles created many chances to tie the game up and force extra play, but could not close the deal as the Patriots held on for the 2-1 victory.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
• Life U did not attempt as many shots as Cumberlands (Ky.), but did well with making their shots on goal 8 (6 on goal) to 13 (8 on goal) for the Patriots.
• The teams were neck-and-neck in both saves and corner kicks, Life U edging out Cumberlands (Ky.) 6-5 in both statistics.
•The game was played relatively clean, Life U recording five fouls and a yellow card, while the Patriots had six fouls.
