MARIETTA, Ga. ---- The Life University men's soccer team fell 2-1 in double overtime Saturday night to Freed-Hardeman on Lupo Family Field to drop to 2-4 in MSC play.
The win would have lifted the Running Eagles to fourth in the conference, however the defeat drops the men to seventh in the standings. Despite outshooting the Lions 32-10 in the match, Life U fell in the extra minute thriller.
Seven minutes into the game, Freed-Hardeman broke through with a pair of passes starting at midfield to lead 1-0. Life U finally broke through in the 28th minute as
Bart Kooistra continued to score for the Running Eagles. Tied at one at the break, Life U held a commanding 11-3 lead in shots over Freed-Hardeman.
The second half began as the Lions' keeper and defense held secure. The Running Eagles outshot the Lions 19-3 in the second half, however the Freed-Hardeman goalie tallied eight saves to preserve the 1-1 scoreline. As the first overtime period came and went, Freed-Hardeman held the slight 3-2 advantage in shots for the ten minute period, as Pekruhl prevented the game-winner with the only save for both teams. Two minutes into the second overtime, a foul at midfield caused a quick free-kick that found Ramirez with a one-on-one opportunity for the win. The late golden goal gave the Lions their second MSC win of the year to bump just in front of the Running Eagles.
In the box score, Freed-Hardeman only led Life U in saves 12-3. Life U led in total shots 32-10, shots on frame 13-5 and corner kicks 9-1. Individually,
Wilfried Tchoupa Kamden led Life U with eight shots and three on frame. Kooistra finished with seven shots and four on frame.
Jelle De Graaf added six shots with three on target as
Luciano Diaz tallied six shots with two on goal.Â
The men's soccer team will have a quick turnaround as they welcome No. 23 nationally ranked Bethel University to Lupo Family Field on Tuesday, March 9, with kickoff at 6 PM after the women's game. Â
