Men's Soccer Secures MSC Tournament Spot with Overtime Win, 2-1, Over Freed-Hardeman

MARIETTA, Ga. ---- The Life University men's soccer earned its spot in the Mid-South Conference Tournament today, advancing through the Opening Round with an overtime, 2-1, victory over 10-seed Freed-Hardeman at Lupo Family Field Monday night.
 
NOTES
• The Opening Round victory improved Life U to 7-7 (6-6), while the Lions' season ends with the loss at 5-9 (4-8).
 
STANDOUT PERFORMERS 
• Freshman midfielder Lewis Holt recorded the first goal of his career in the game on his only shot taken.
Zidane Bogle recorded the game-winning goal off of a penalty kick, taking three total shots during the game with only one on goal.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Life U pushed the ball onto the Lions' side of the field early, but it was Freed-Hardeman that struck first, racing down the field after a Running Eagle shot to record a goal in the game's fifth minute. Both teams kept finding themselves in good position to score, but were unable to convert the shots into goals. Finally at the 17:56 mark, Holt got the first goal of his career in past the keeper to tie the game at 1-1. Life U turned the heat up after the goal, keeping pressure on Freed-Hardeman through the rest of the half. A red card saw the Lions have to start playing a man down with a new keeper in the game in the final minutes of the half, the teams going into the break tied 1-1.
• The second half shot count was completely dominated by Life U as Freed-Hardeman played a man down, but the team struggled to put shots on frame. Life U out shot the Lions nearly 5-to-1 over the second half, but the teams finished regulation still tied 1-1. The Running Eagles maintained their momentum in overtime, continuing to outpace Freed-Hardeman in shots attempted. With 4:16 left in overtime, a Lions' foul in the penalty area set Bogle up with a chance to end the game. He booted the shot into the bottom left corner of the net to end the game 2-1.
  
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
• Life U outdid Freed-Hardeman by a wide margin in shots, taking 35 (10 on goal) compared to the Lions' eight (four on goal).
• Freed-Hardeman held an 8-3 advantage in saves recorded, while the Running Eagles had a huge edge in corner kicks at 16-0.
• Life U was penalized much more in the game, taking 19 fouls to the Lions' 6, while both teams received two cards.

• The men's soccer team hits the road for the Mid-South Conference Tournament next, facing a too be determined opponent in the quarterfinals. Friday, April 9 on the campus of Campbellsville University.
