Women's Basketball Holds On for 64-60 Home Win over Cumberland

MARIETTA, Ga. ---- The Life University women's basketball team held off a late Cumberland University run to earn the 64-60 home Mid-South Conference win Monday night.

Life U (6-13, 2-9) outscored Cumberland (7-10, 2-8) 17-14 in each of the first two quarters to go into the half with a 34-28 lead. The Phoenix answered back in the third quarter with an 11-8 advantage, however a late three from Eva Caroline Singleton gave the Running Eagles the 42-39 advantage heading to the fourth quarter.

Life U led by as many as ten, 58-48, with 1:58 remaining in the game. Cumberland answered with an 8-0 run over the next 1:03 to cut the lead to just two, 58-56. Anteria Evans came through at the free-throw line with 34 ticks left on the clock to put the Running Eagles ahead by four, 60-56. A foul on the inbounds allowed no time to come of the clock, but a pair of free-throws from Cumberland again brought the game to within two, 60-58. Santiago hit one from the charity stripe at 32 seconds to increase the lead to three, as Cumberland came storming down the court and missed a wide-open three with 15 seconds remaining. Sienna Bailey secured the rebound and hit her pair of free-throws to put Life U ahead by five, 63-58 with 12 seconds left in the game. Cumberland scored one more basket in the paint as Calsapeu sealed the win at the free-throw line for the 64-60 home win for the Running Eagles.

Cumberland finished 20-58 (34.5%) from the floor and just 3-21 (14.3%) from behind the arc. The Phoenix were 17-24 (70.8%) from the free-throw line and added 24 points in the paint. They totaled 22 points off 22 Life U turnovers and tallied 11 assists with eight steals and a pair of blocks.

Life U finished 20-54 (37%) from the floor and 8-15 (53.3%) from beyond the arc. The Running Eagles were 16-25 (64%) from the free-throw line and won the battle of the boards over the Phoenix 47-29. The team finished with 18 points in the paint with 16 bench points and 12 assists with three steals and a pair of blocks.

Lenise Santiago led the Running Eagles with a game-high 20 points and six rebounds with an assist. Tanit Calsapeu added 13 points with three assists, three rebounds and a steal. Eva Caroline Singleton finished with nine and totaled five rebounds with an assist. Rachel Wilson totaled a team-high nine rebounds with a pair of assists and four points as Anteria Evans and Amara Edeh each finished with eight points in the game. 

The women's basketball team will return to action on Thursday, January 27, when they continue Mid-South Conference action at home and host Shawnee State University at 6 PM inside the Eagles' Nest.
