BLUE MOUNTAIN, Miss. --- The Life University men's soccer team compiled five second half scores as
Thierry Jules and
Bart Kooistra both scored twice to give the Running Eagles a 7-1 victory at Blue Mountain College Saturday afternoon in Southern States Athletic Conference play.
In the team's penultimate game of the regular season, Life U (10-2-1, 4-2-1 SSAC) played oppressively on both offense and defense against host Blue Mountain College (5-8-2, 2-3-2 SSAC), taking a massive 16-1 lead in shots taken. The pressure Life U created on the attack saw the team hold a strong edge in corner kicks as well at 5-2. Unsurprisingly for a game that saw such a shot disparity, the Toppers led in saves 5-0. The game was called rather evenly be the refs, Life U being called for slightly more fouls, 15-14, while both teams earned a card.
It was not until midway through the first half that the Running Eagles got on the board first, the team putting a pair of shots on frame before
Matteo Olivotto finally broke through on a pass from Kooistra to give the team a 1-0 lead in the 22nd minute. Just 13 minutes later, Kooistra assisted another score, this one coming off the foot of Jules to put the team ahead 2-0. In the final minutes Life u put two other shots on frame, but were not able to convert, seeing the teams head to the half time break with Life U on top 2-0.
The Toppers only shot of the day recorded them their only goal in the opening minutes of the half, cutting the Running Eagle lead to 2-1. 10 minutes later the floodgates opened for Life U, starting with a Kooistra score that was assisted by
Callum Jenkins. Not even two minutes later Kooistra earned his second goal of the game, extending the lead to 4-1. At the 62:52 mark, Jules kicked in his second score of the game on what was Kooistra's third assist. In the final 10 minutes of play, Jamie Gonzalez posted a score on a Jenkins assists, while making a clean pass to
Sem vd Leer for the final score of the game. After Leer's score to push the lead to 7-1, neither team took another shot to see the game come to a close.
Head Coach
Alex Pama was pleased with how his forwards attacked on the day and how the team performed on the road. "Great team performance and good to see a dominant forward performance with our forwards again scoring goals. It's always difficult playing on the road in these type of games, but the lads did so brilliantly." Pama finished, saying, "We kept everyone healthy and our injured players are on the way back which is a bonus."
The regular season comes to a close Thursday with a home game against Brewton-Parker at 7:30 PM as the team honors its graduating seniors.
