Dominant Road Showing Leads to First Conference Victory for Women's Soccer

MONTGOMERY, Ala. --- A pair of second half goals created enough breathing room for the Running Eagles to ease into their first Southern States Athletic Conference victory of the season, besting host, Faulkner, by a score of 3-1 Thursday evening.

Life U (3-5-2, 1-2-1 SSAC) relied on an offensive onslaught to keep momentum on their side of the field against Faulkner (7-3-2, 2-1-0 SSAC), holding a massive 25-5 edge in shots taken, 16-3 lead in shots on goal, and a smaller 6-4 advantage in corner kicks. With the large disparity in shots on goal, Faulkner held a large lead in saves at 13-2. The referees called Life U on a few more fouls, 10-7, but Faulkner earned the only two cards of the game.

Despite the disparity that would eventually exist in shots taken, neither team did much over the first portion of the opening half, three of Faulkner's shots coming in first 27 minutes. The Running Eagles third shot of the game did not come until the 28th minute, but it was a good one as Sarah Slingluff recorded her first scored goal of the season to give the team a 1-0 lead. Life U put three more shots on frame over the remainder of the half, while Faulkner did not take another shot to see the teams enter the break at 1-0.

After an early shot on frame by the Eagles to start the second half, Life U continued applying pressure to a Faulkner back line that was getting more and more tired. 24 minutes into the second, Life U broke through for its second score, Anakah Madril collecting a ball from Thora Hreggvidsdottir and getting it by the goalkeeper to extend the lead to 2-0. In the 78th minute, the Running Eagles put the finishing touches on the game, Hreggvidsdottir passing off the ball to Jeanne Brigand this time to see the score move to 3-0. The Life U defense made it so that Faulkner did not get their second shot of the second half off until the final 30 seconds of the game, but the desperation shot scored to see the game come to a final of 3-1.

The Running Eagles are off for a little more than a week before playing their next game, a home tilt against Dalton State on October 15th at 1:30 PM.
