MARIETTA, Ga. — The Life University women's basketball team cruised to a 69-47 win over Thomas University Monday night, completing the series sweep and capping the Running Eagles' 2022 calendar schedule with a win.
The win was fueled by an impressive performance from senior forward Eva Caroline Singleton. The Paris, Tennessee native stepped into the starting role to record a new season-high in both scoring and rebounding, tallying 24 and eight, respectively.
The one-sided affair began in the first quarter as the Running Eagles (10-4, 3-2 SSAC) limited the Night Hawks' (1-11, 0-5 SUN) offense to just 2-17 shooting from the field and an abysmal 0-5 from longe-range in the opening frame. After one, Life U. led 13-5.
In the second quarter, both teams scored the ball more consistently, but it was primarily Life University turnovers that led to the Night Hawks outscoring the Running Eagles in the frame. TU went on to score 19 in the frame, compared to Life University's 17. Headed to the break, Life U. held a six point lead, 30-24.
After a poor first half in terms of taking care of the ball (15 TOs in the first half), the Running Eagles executed their offensive schemes much more efficiently, only coughing the ball up five times in the final 20 minutes of play.
The third quarter was Life University's most dominant, scoring 22 points and hitting 3-5 from deep. Eva Caroline Singleton's individual effort nearly outscored Thomas' entire offensive quarter production as the senior scored 11 individually, compared to TU's 13 as a team.
Headed to the fourth with the game well in hand, the Running Eagles continued to grow the lead reaching the game's largest score discrepancy at the 4:25 mark, 67-42.
All in all, the Running Eagles led for the entire duration of the contest, scoring first and never looking back en route to the win. Alongside Singleton, fellow starters Maikya Simmons and Kierra York both reached double-digits as Life University played every available member in the 69-47 rout of Thomas.
Up next, the women's team will face Southern States' opponent William Carey University on January 5th, 2023. Tipoff in the Eagles' Nest is set for 5:30 pm.
