LAURINBURG, N.C. ---- The Life University men's volleyball team earned a hard fought 3-2 Mid-South Conference win over St. Andrews over the weekend to improve to 6-2 in conference action.
The Running Eagles fell in the first set 25-20, but rallied back in the second set 25-23. St. Andrews picked up the win 25-21 in the third set, as Life U rallied in the fourth set to win 32-30 to force a fifth set. Facing three match points in the fifth, the Running Eagles picked up a kill from Perez and a block from Cabana and Ollie with a setting error to earn the 20-18 win on the road.
St. Andrews totaled 65 kills with 30 errors for a .246 hitting percentage. The Knights did not lead in a single statistical category as they finished with four aces, 11 blocks, 60 assists and 40 digs.
Life U also totaled 65 kills in the match with a .250 hitting percentage. The Running Eagles led with five aces, 18 total blocks, 63 assists and 41 digs in the match.
Individually,
Diego Perez and
Josh Henson led the way with 15 kills each. Perez added five block assists with a solo block and two digs, as Henson added a solo block and seven digs.
Felipe Gonzalez finished the match with 13 kills and a service ace with six digs.
Alex Cabana totaled 12 kills with a pair of service aces and six block assists with three solo blocks and six digs.
Javier Cornier was able to pick up a program-record 60 assists in the match with five block assists and a solo block. Ollie totaled a team-high nince digs with a service ace.
The men's volleyball team will return to action on Wednesday, February 23, when they host Reinhardt University at 7 PM in the Eagles' Nest to continue Mid-South Conference action.
