TALLADEGA, Ala. --- In the Life University women's volleyball team's first Southern States Athletic Conference contest, the Running Eagles played efficiently on the attack to record a dominant, 3-0 victory over Talladega College on the road Saturday afternoon.
Life U (4-2, 1-0 SSAC) earned the victory over host Talladega (6-3, 0-1 SSAC) in large part due to what was the team's most efficient day on the attack thus far into the season. The Running Eagles posted a .352 attack percentage with 39 total kills while the Tornado's had a harder time in part due to the Life U block, only having a .102 attack percentage to go with 29 kills. Another area that played out heavily in the Running Eagles' favor were aces, the team leading the stat 11-5.
It took a little while for Life U to pull away in the first set, Talladega keeping things close until after midway in the set at a 14-14 tie. The Running Eagles ripped off a seven-volley streak, setter
Kennedy Neal starting it with a quick attack for a kill of her own before assisting on three of the other kills.
Macey Sipmann and
Fayola Louis ended the set in Life U's favor, 25-18, with an emphatic block.
The momentum the team built towards the end of the first set continued into the second, Life U quickly jumping out to an 8-2 lead following back-to-back
Emilee Brown kills. A 3-0 run by Life ended in a service ace by
Cassidy Lee to extend the lead to 16-7.
Lena Pucnik provided a pair of points with an ace and a kill before the set ended 25-16 off a C. Lee kill.
The third set played out as a back-and-forth contest Life U not able to pull away through the majority of the period. After a 3-0 run to start the set from Talladega, the Running Eagles posted a 4-0 run of their own which included a pair of
Savannah Keener aces. Down 15-14, Louis came up huge for her team, posting a pair pair of kills in a 3-0 run and then a pair of aces in a 4-0 run to create enough space to see the Running Eagles take the lead for good. The game ended on four-straight attack errors by the Tornados to see the set end 25-19.
The Running Eagles return home for their next contest, facing conference foe Middle Georgia State Tuesday, Sept. 13 at 6 PM in the Upper Gym.
