Electric First Half Leads to 6-1 Victory Over Thomas for Women's Soccer at Home

MARIETTA, Ga. --- Thora Hreggvidsdottir earned a hat trick in a first half alone that saw the Life University women's soccer team match their scoring total up to tonight's game in the first half, earning the team its first victory of the season at home against Thomas University, 6-1, Friday evening at Lupo Family Field.

Life U (1-2-1) found their rhythm on offense tonight against Thomas (4-2-1), leading to the team holding a solid 17-12 advantage in shots taken and 7-4 on corner kick opportunities. Despite the abundance of scoring for Life U, the biggest decider in the game might have actually come from the goal keepers, Lisset Fernanda Ruiz-Franco giving the Running Eagles an 8-5 edge in the statistic. Regarding the referees, Life U found itself on the receiving end of their attention more than the Night Hawks, collecting an 11-8 edge in fouls and 2-1 in cards.

It did not take long for the Running Eagles to get started, Hreggvidsdottir scoring her first goal of the game off a pass from Sarah Slingluff just 10 minutes in for the 1-0 lead. After the 20th minute the Running Eagles ran off a pair of goals in quick succession, Anakah Madril scoring a solo goal first before Hreggvidsdottir followed her up just two minutes later to see the lead extend to 3-0 just 23:45 into the game. It did not take much longer for the fourth and final score of the first half to be registered, Hreggvidsdottir collecting a well placed pass from Jeanne Brigand to record a first half hat trick and 4-0 lead for the Running Eagles. Ruiz-Franco put a stop to the Night Hawks best opportunity to score in the first half, diving to save a pair of shots from very close range in the half's final minutes to see the teams go into the break with Life U leading 4-0.

Coming out of the break, Thomas finally got on the board 11 minutes in, a mid-range shot placed into the top right corner closing the lead to 4-1. After a run of shots on frame by the Night Hawks, Brigand got in on the scoring herself in the 71st minute, pushing the lead to 5-1 after an assist from Agnes Birta Stefansdottir off a free kick. Thomas continued to press the attack trying to shorten the Life U lead, but the Running Eagles' defensive effort kept them from being able to earn another goal. Hreggvidsdottir posted her fourth and final goal of the game off a pass from Sacha Millward in the 88th minute, push the lead to 6-1 for the final.

The women's soccer team hits the road for its next couple of games, starting with a game against Webber International Monday, September 19th at 4 PM.
