MONTGOMERY, Ala. — The Life University women's basketball team battled in a narrow loss to RV Faulkner University Thursday night, falling to the Eagles 61-52. The SSAC contest proved to be a tough offensive night for both teams, as both the Running Eagles and the Eagles combined to shoot 5-47 from long range.
To start the game, the Running Eagles held a lead for the entirety of the opening quarter, going up by as many as six before the Eagles tied the game at 16-all. After that, Andrea Martin Ruiz found Haley Gantt for the final Life U. bucket of the quarter, 20-16. Faulkner's multi-time SSAC player of the week Morgan Holland then scored the final basket of the quarter to cut the lead in half, 20-18.
Second quarter action then saw the Running Eagles really to struggle on the offensive end, scoring 10 points in the second period as the lead quickly turned into a four point deficit by halftime, 34-30.
In the second half, a rejuvenated defense on both ends saw Life U. total 11 points in the third quarter, while Faulkner extended the gap by another point, 46-41.
The offensive woes then continued to plague both teams in the fourth as the Running Eagles scored 11 in the period. With the deficit cut to five (50-45), the Running Eagles pushed for one final run, but crucial misses down the stretch, including misses on eight of the team's last ten attempts from the field, saw the Running Eagles once again get outscored by the visitors 15-11 in the final period.
In the end, the Eagles gained a lead in the second quarter and never looked back en route to the 61-52 win.
Up next, the Running Eagles will travel to Denmark, South Carolina this weekend to compete in their last non-conference contest of the season. Tipoff against Vorhees College is set for 2 PM.
