HATTIESBURG, MS. — The Life University men's soccer team fell to #6 William Carey on Thursday, staying in a winless slump after dropping four of their last five. The Running Eagles and Crusaders battled to a scoreless 0-0 at half, but two goals separated by merely a minute was all that was needed for WCU to capture the win.
In the first half, the Running Eagles generated just two shots as a Jinwoo Kang shot in the 43rd minute was Life U's best chance at scoring. The Crusaders held much of the possession on the Running Eagle half as they piled on six shots and five corners in the first 45 minutes of play. Despite the opportunities, the Running Eagles forced everything away from net as Branko Kanacki kept the net clean without a save headed to intermission.
In the second half, the Running Eagles created more chances than WCU, with their first opportunity of the half forcing a save after a Nipho Methula shot was saved in the 60th. After the save, two consecutive WCU goals proved to be Life University's demise, conceding goals in the 61st and 62nd minute.
After the goals, the Running Eagles amped up their attack, dominating possession, creating chances, and earning corners. The first opportunity for the Running Eagles was a Sem van der Leer corner that found the head of Carlos Flores, just missing the net. Life U then recorded two more corners in the 70th and 71st minute but were unable to deliver a shot towards frame. In the final minutes, Life U created even better opportunities as Matteo Olivotto's shot in the 79th minute beat everyone but the post. The heartbreak then continued in the 85th minute as Lars van Der Steen joined the attack to have his header also beat everyone but the post. Two ensuing shots and corners were delivered into the box as the Crusaders were just able to hold on to earn the key SSAC win.
Up next, the Running Eagles remain on the road facing #11 University of Mobile this Saturday at 5 pm est.
