MONTGOMERY, AL — The Life University women's basketball team opened the Southern States Athletic Conference Tournament with a dominant win over Middle Georgia, 68-48.
The Running Eagles (15-14, 6-12 SSAC) earned the win after storming ahead to a 42-21 lead in the first half. The explosion was fueled by a strong offensive half from Caroline Singleton, scoring 19 of her 21 points in the first half. The transfer shot 8-11 from the field and 3-5 from long range in the opening half as the Knights (8-17, 5-13 SSAC) had no answer for the senior forward.
The second half saw both teams turn the defensive intensity up a notch with neither team finding success in the third, both struggling to score as each team tallied seven points in the frame.
Headed to the fourth, and up by 21, the Running Eagles held on for the final ten minutes, cruising to a 19-point conference tournament-opening win.
Overall, Life University made the most of Middle Georgia's lapses, converting 12 points from MGA turnovers and scoring six points after offensive boards. The Running Eagle starters were dominant, tallying 51 points and grabbing seven steals. The Running Eagles shot 43% from the field and 7-19 from beyond the arc.
In the win, the Running Eagles led for all but the first two possessions, earning a 5-4 lead and never looked back in the win. Alongside Singleton, fellow starters Fapou Semebene and Tierra Tullis both reached double-digits as Life University played eleven members in the 68-48 routing of Middle Georgia.
Up next, the Running Eagles will face the top-seeded Wolfpack from Loyola-New Orleans. The #9 Wolfpack meet the Running Eagles after a first round bye, winners of nine straight to conclude their regular season. Loyola picked up wins in both matchups this season, most recently besting the Running Eagles 91-63 on February 18th.
