Running Eagles Receive Tough 3-1 Loss on the Road

LAURINBURG, NC – Life University fought hard but fell short this afternoon against St. Andrews 3-1. With the loss, the Running Eagles drop to 7-9 on the season.

The Running Eagles were led offensively by Diego Martinez who notched 14 kills along with seven digs. David Barcan added ten kills with three block assists, and Jakaris Brown notched seven kills. Martinez came away with three aces while Barcan, Brown and Alexis Prado each put in one apiece. Assisting in the attack, Nefty Vigo led the way with 33 assists while Prado tallied two. Defensively, two players tallied double-digit digs.

The Knights started off hot with a 5-2 run to open the first set. A Diego Martinez kill brought the game close with a kill, 8-7, but the hosts would go on to tally six of the next seven points. Later in the set, the Running Eagles saw five consecutive points fall in favor of the Knights, moving the score to 24-14. With too much to overcome, the Running Eagles later fell in the first set 25-16.

In the second set, a resurgence from Life U saw the Running Eagles string together eleven consecutive unanswered points as the team fell behind 2-0 before soaring back to an impressive 11-2 scoreline. The run was finally stopped with a St. Andrews' kill, but after the emphatic start to the second set, Life U held on two win set number two 25-12.

Unfortunately for the Running Eagles, the momentum from the second set did not translate into the next two sets as in set three, St. Andrews fought to a 25-19 win, highlighted by two big kills to win the third set. After the third set, the Running Eagles fell in the what ended up being the final set 25-18.
