MARIETTA, Ga. --- On a chilly Saturday at Lupo Family Field, the Life University women's lacrosse team pulled away to secure their first Sun Conference victory in a physical match against (RV) Webber International, 18-10.
Â
Life U (6-1, 1-0 SUN) earned the victory in large part due to outstanding performances from the dynamic duo,
Maria Arvizu and
Lexi Santiago. As she often does, Arvizu showed up in every phase of the game, leading both teams in nearly every statistical category: goals at eight, assists at two, ground balls at 10, caused turnovers at eight, and a massive 16 draw controls. Santiago also made her presence felt with five goals, seven ground balls, and five caused turnovers.
Â
The Running Eagles took some time to get warmed up, Webber International scoring the first two goals of the game to see Life U in a 2-0 deficit five minutes in. Just inside the seven-minute mark, the Running Eagles finally came alive,
Annslee Warchol netting the first score in what was a 9-0 run for Life U. Santiago and Arvizu both posted three scores during the run, while
Annaliese Froese and
Peyton Sanders also got in on the scoring to see the team holding a 9-2 edge with 1:40 to play till the half. In the final seconds, the Warriors recorded a pair of scores to send the teams to the half, Life U leading 9-4.
Â
The Warriors run continued into the second half, making it three unanswered with a score 30 seconds into the third. Life U pushed the lead back out to seven, answering with a three-score run of their own that saw
Nicole Ortiz score her first of the day, and Froese rip in a shot as well. After pushing the lead to 12-5 with11:32 to play in the third, the teams traded scores the rest of the way. Holding a 15-10 lead with nine minutes to play, The Life U defense smothered any chance for Webber International to get back into the game. Three more Running Eagles scores saw the game end 18-10 for the home team.
Â
Life U hits the road for their next couple of Sun Conference games, starting with a game at No. 1 Keiser March 23rd at 6 PM.
