WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. --- The Life University women's lacrosse team played its seventh ranked game of the year Saturday, traveling to former conference foe, University of the Cumberlands, where they suffered a 16-6 defeat.
Despite the lopsided final score, Life U (8-4) stayed close to the Patriots (14-1) in most statistical categories. The Patriots only outshot the Running Eagles 27-23, Life U just struggled to put shots on frame. The Running Eagles caused more turnovers, 17-15, and tied in ground balls, 26 each, but were at decisive disadvantages in clear rate, 18-for-32 to Cumberlands' 21-for-27, and in free position shots attempted, 9-3.Â
The first quarter was a back-and-forth affair, the teams trading scores as neither could create a decisive advantage.
Lacy Legaspi and
Peyton Sanders recorded the first goals of the game for Life U, and after trailing 4-2,
Annslee Warchol and
Roxie Beasley netted a pair of goals to even the score. In the final minute of the opening 15, the Patriots recorded one more score to take the lead. The second quarter saw things fall apart, Cumberlands going on a 6-0 streak over the course of the period to take a 10-4 lead into the break.
Neither team's attack could get things going in the third quarter, the only score coming from the home team in the final two minutes of the period. Life U was able to find some offense in the final quarter of play, but it was too little too late. Legaspi and
Alyssa Curto posted scores midway through the period to give the final of 16-6.
The Running Eagles return home for their regular season finale and senior day against Warner University, Saturday at 1 PM.
