Running Eagles Hold Off Skyhawks in 59-51 Win

WEST POINT, Ga. - The Life U women's basketball team continued its road stretch, with a 59-51 win over Point University on Wednesday evening in West Point.

Playing the Skyhawks the second time this season, the Running Eagles used a dominant first quarter run to separate from Point and improve to 9-3 in SSAC play. 

Senior Deborah Powell delivered a second double-double of the season, scoring 13 points on 6-of-7 shooting and grabbing ten boards. Senior Maikya Simmons led the Running Eagles with 14 points and five assists.

Andrea Martin Ruiz was the third and final Running Eagles to reach double figures, adding eleven points to the score.

The game was evenly played other than the first quarter, with Life U outscoring the Skyhawks 14-5 the first ten minutes. The Running Eagles were outscored in the second and fourth quarter, but was not enough for Point to take a lead the entire game. 

Life U led by nine at the end of the opening quarter and led by eight winding down the first half. However, the Skyhawks used a quick 9-3 run to cut Life U's lead to 39-33 in the middle of the third.

Point fought back hard to cut its deficit to single digits, but were never close enough to threaten the Running Eagles.

Up next, the Running Eagles are back in action Saturday, closing out the four game road trip with a battle against Blue Mountain at 1 p.m.

TURNING POINT:

- Life U delivered a 14-5 run in the first ten minutes to separate from the Skyhawks.

STANDOUT PERFORMANCES:

- Powell scored 13 points, earning a double-double for the second time this season.

- Simmons dished out five assists and a team-best of 14 points in the win.
