MARIETTA, Ga. — The Life University Women's Basketball secured a 58-47 win over Cumberland (TN) on Wednesday evening at the Eagles' Nest. The Running Eagles pushed through some third quarter shooting woes with a strong fourth quarter to pull away with the eleven point win.
After a closely contested first quarter the Running Eagles took control in the second quarter, outscoring Cumberland 18-11 to establish early momentum. Maikya Simmons got things going with four points after a jumper and two free throws. Kenya Robinson added four points and three rebounds, while Aniyah Offutt scored six, including a fast-break layup. Defensively, Life U limited Cumberland to 30.4% shooting in the quarter. After the strong quarter, the Running Eagles carried a 30-21 lead into the break.
After a challenging third quarter where the Running Eagles only managed six points, Life U came alive in the final period, outscoring Cumberland 22-13 to seal the victory. The Running Eagles' offense exploded, with Maikya Simmons scoring nine of her 14 points, including a key basket to extend Life's lead. Aniyah Offutt also added another four points.
In the second half, despite struggling on offense, Life's defense remained strong, forcing turnovers and limiting Cumberland's opportunities. The Running Eagles excelled on the boards, outrebounding Cumberland 39-31 and converting turnovers into 17 points. The Running Eagles also capitalized on fast breaks scoring eight points in transition and 24 points in the paint.
Maikya Simmons led the charge for Life with 14 points, including nine in the final quarter, solidifying the win. Aniyah Offutt added 12 points and four rebounds, while Kenya Robinson and Brionna Sims combined for 13 rebounds and provided crucial defensive support. The bench played a key role as well, contributing 19 points to the team's total.
