MARIETTA, Ga. - The Life University men's basketball team defeated Faulkner University 89-75 at home in the Eagles' Nest Monday night, relying on strong three-point shooting and a balanced offensive attack to secure the rare non-conference victory over Faulkner.
The first half opened with Life U setting the tone early. Elias Ramirez knocked down a three-pointer just 12 seconds into the game, giving the Running Eagles an early lead. The Running Eagles then maintained its pace with efficient shooting, led by Tyreke Johnson and Srdjan Popovich, who combined for 17 first-half points. Cortez Johnson added six points and strong rebounding, helping Life U build a 46-37 lead at halftime.
In the second half, the Running Eagles extended their advantage with hot shooting from beyond the arc. Popovich was particularly effective, hitting three three-pointers in the half to finish with 14 points, four rebounds, and six assists. Tyreke Johnson contributed 15 points and five assists, including a three-pointer midway through the second half to push Life's lead to double digits.
The Running Eagles also benefited from key bench contributions. Deandre Cowan scored 11 points on 5-of-7 shooting, while Matija Gledic added eight points and six rebounds. Life's defense stepped up as well, forcing Faulkner into 11 turnovers and holding their opponents to 29.2% shooting from three-point range.
For Faulkner, KJ Rogers led all scorers with 21 points and nine rebounds, while Jonathan Garcia contributed 19 points, including five three-pointers. However, Faulkner was unable to overcome Life's efficiency and ball movement.
Life U shot 50.8% from the field, including 42.9% (18-of-42)(a new season best) from three-point range, and tallied 23 assists on 32 made baskets. The Running Eagles also won the rebounding battle, grabbing 41 boards compared to Faulkner's 37.
Up next, the Running Eagles look ahead to the weekend where both the men's and women's programs are set to host the University of Tennessee Southern in SSAC play. Tip-off is set for 2 pm.
