MARIETTA, Ga. — The Life University men's basketball team secured an intense 92-84 victory over Thomas on Saturday afternoon at the Eagles' Nest. Chaze Harris delivered a masterful performance highlighted by 38 points, 11 rebounds, and 8 assists in the win.
The game started with both teams showcasing their offensive strengths, but it was Life U's efficiency that set the tone. The Running Eagles shot an impressive 52.2% from the field and 36.8% from beyond the arc, while also making the most of their opportunities at the free-throw line, converting 77.1% of their 48 attempts. Thomas, on the other hand, struggled with turnovers and defensive lapses despite a decent shooting performance of 39.4% from the field.
The first half was a back-and-forth battle, with Thomas taking a slight lead into halftime at 45-35. However, Life U came out of the break with renewed energy and focus. Their defensive intensity limited Thomas to just 39 second-half points, while the Running Eagles exploded for 57 points, reversing the halftime deficit and taking control of the game in the final moments.
Key to Life U's comeback was their dominance on the boards and relentless pursuit of second-chance points. Although both teams finished with 35 rebounds, Life U's 30 defensive boards proved crucial in stifling Thomas's offensive efforts. Chaze Harris was the standout performer, leading the team with a staggering 38 points, 11 rebounds, and 8 assists. Harris shot an impressive 9-for-11 from the field and an exceptional 19-for-22 from the free-throw line, setting the pace of the game as the primary ball handler with a keen ability to draw fouls.
Cortez Johnson also had a solid outing, contributing 16 points and 7 rebounds, while Srdjan Popovich added 8 points and 2 rebounds before fouling out. Will Freeman and Tyreke Johnson made key contributions as well, combining for 20 points and solid defensive efforts.
Despite Thomas's efforts, led by Joshua Robertson's 21 points and Deonta Jones's 12 points, the Night Hawks could not overcome their turnover woes, committing 11 that Life U turned into 13 points. Thomas's bench provided some spark with 32 points.
The Running Eagles capitalized on their trips to the free-throw line, drawing 33 fouls from Thomas and slowing the game's pace to their advantage. Aggressive play and the ability to maintain composure under pressure was evident in the final minutes as the Running Eagles closed out the game.
With this win, Life U improves to 15-4 overall and 8-2 in SSAC play, positioning themselves as strong contenders in the conference.
Up next, the Running Eagles will hit the road for a non-conference matchup against Spartanburg-Methodist on Wednesday.
