MARIETTA, Ga. - The Life University women's lacrosse team fell to the Gyrenes of Ave Maria early Saturday afternoon. Life U trailed from the jump as the defense struggled to slow down the visitors in the first half.

It took just 18 seconds for the scoring to begin, with the visiting Gyrenes finding the opening goal. Both defenses played well in the first, but back-to-back goals from the visitors midway through gave them a 3-0 lead. A fourth goal from Ave Maria gave them the largest lead of the first period before Roxie Beasley got Life U on the board. Beasley then connected with Lexi Santiago shortly after, cutting the lead in half. Santiago once again found the back of the net with just nine seconds left to play in the first as Life U trailed by one heading into the second.

The Gyrenes once again cracked the Running Eagles defense to start the scoring in the second. The visitors scored a pair of goals just seconds apart to take a 6-3 lead in the period. The lead again climbed to four but was quickly cut back down as Sainabou Foon scored her only goal of the contest. Despite the goal, Life U surrendered two more before the end of the half, trailing 9-4.

Out of the break, Ave Maria continued to hold the Running Eagles just out of reach. Hannah Leon got on the board in the third period, assisted by Alyssa Curto. Curto then got herself on the board, followed by Nicole Ortiz and Beasley as the lead was slashed to just two.

Trailing 10-8 heading into the final period, a man-up opportunity that carried over from the previous period cost the Running Eagles as the visitors stretched the lead back to three. Ortiz and Leon once again found the back of the net midway through the period as Life U desperately tried to climb back into the fight. However, two goals is as close as Life U would get, with the visitors winning 13-10.

Up next, the Running Eagles hop on the road to take on St. Thomas on Thursday, March 20.

--Ave Maria used a five-goal second period to take a commanding lead.
