In 2013, Life University (Life U) announced the expansion of its athletic department to include several new sports, with particular emphasis on growing women's opportunities. In February 2014, Life U made Women's Swimming official with the naming of Life University professor, Dr. Yit Lim as head coach.
Lim has taught sports nutrition and exercise physiology in Life U's College of Undergraduate Studies and College of Graduate Studies and Research for the past 14 years, while also coaching youth swimming for the Marietta Marlins Swim Club. He was also a competitive swimmer throughout high school and college, and represented his native Malaysia in international swimming competition.
Said Lim, "Swimming is a great sport because it requires incredible discipline and training. I am excited that Life University is starting the team here because it will serve as a great complement to the high educational standards here. I hope to educate student-athletes in life through competitive swimming."
Lim already has one student signed up for the team, with several more that have expressed an interest in joining. He will be recruiting for other members of the team from the current student body, as well as high school seniors. He hopes to have 30 on the team by the time the inaugural season starts in the fall of 2014.
Life U Director of Athletics John Barrett said of the hiring, "Dr. Lim has an impressive background both in swimming and in human performance. I couldn't think of a better person to build this program, and we are fortunate that he is already fully immersed in the culture and academics of Life University."
Life U plans to start the program with the women's swimming team and eventually adding a men's team as early as fall of 2015. The long-term goal is to add diving as well. Since the university does not have a natatorium on campus, the team will practice at a facility near the campus in Marietta.
