Women's Wrestling Competes at For Her Duals

CORALVILLE, Ia. — The Life University women's wrestling team put together a strong showing at the For Her Duals, finishing the event with a 3–1 record and a third-place team finish after four competitive duals on the day.

Round 1

Life University 25, Ottawa University 20

Life University opened the tournament with a hard-fought victory over Ottawa University, overcoming an early deficit to claim a 25–20 win.

Ottawa struck first with falls at 103 and 110 pounds, but the Running Eagles responded quickly at 117, as Salyna Shotwell ignited the comeback with a first-period fall over Sigrin Metzger in 1:45. Anna Krejsa followed at 124 with a dominant 10–0 technical fall, and Olivia Mottley added another 10–0 technical fall at 131 to give Life its first lead of the dual.

Zaynah McBryde extended the advantage with a 7–1 decision over #13 Aileen Lester, before Jamilah McBryde delivered bonus points at 145 with a fall in 1:29. Ottawa earned a pin at 160 to keep the dual tight, but Reka Busa provided a crucial swing at 180 with a 10–0 technical fall. Ottawa closed with a technical fall at 207, but Life had already secured enough points to open the day with a 25–20 victory.

Round 2

Life University 23, Indiana Tech 20

The Running Eagles leaned on late-match heroics to edge Indiana Tech 23–20 in another tightly contested dual.

Indiana Tech opened with a fall at 103 and an 11–8 decision at 110 to take an early lead. Shotwell once again halted the momentum, recording a fall in just 1:11 at 117. Kennedy Russell followed at 124 with a clutch 13–10 decision to keep Life within striking distance.

Indiana Tech regained control with wins at 131, 145, and 160, including technical falls at both upper weights. Facing a deficit, Life responded with urgency as Zaynah McBryde turned in a statement performance at 138, securing an 11–0 technical fall over #17 Kinnley Smith.

The dual came down to the final two bouts. Latifah McBryde delivered a pivotal moment at 180 with a first-period fall in 1:44 to swing the team score, and Madeline Welch sealed the comeback at 207 with a 10–0 technical fall, lifting Life to a 23–20 win.

Round 3

William Penn 23, Life University 20

Life University battled William Penn in one of the most competitive duals of the tournament but came up just short in a narrow 23–20 setback.

Alyssa Quezaire opened the dual with authority at 103, posting a 10–0 technical fall. William Penn answered with a technical fall at 110, an 11–4 decision at 117, and another technical fall at 124 to build momentum.

The Running Eagles answered in the middle weights as Olivia Mottley earned a 14–3 technical fall at 131, followed by a dominant 10–0 technical fall from Jamilah McBryde at 145. William Penn regained separation with a 10–0 technical fall at 138 and a fall at 160.

The Running Eagles closed strong, with Latifah McBryde recording a 13–2 technical fall at 180 and Reka Busa earning a 4–1 decision at 207, but the late surge was not enough as William Penn held on for the three-point victory.

Third-Place Match

Life University 27, McKendree University 18

Life University rebounded emphatically in the third-place match, defeating McKendree University 27–18 to close the tournament on a high note.

McKendree opened with a fall at 103, but Life responded immediately as Diana Gonzalez earned a fall in 1:10 at 110. Shotwell followed with a lightning-fast pin in just 48 seconds at 117, and Krejsa extended the lead with a 10–0 technical fall at 124.

After McKendree earned technical falls at 131 and 138, the Running Eagles steadied themselves in the upper weights. Jamilah McBryde picked up a 9–4 decision at 145, and Latifah McBryde added a fall in 2:14 at 160. Following a McKendree decision at 180, Welch closed the dual with a controlled 5–1 decision at 207 to secure the team victory and third-place finish.
